Choosing the right fonts..

April 3rd, 2006

There are lots of things one should keep in mind, and one thing to keep in mind when creating and designing a website are the fonts.

As they say content is the king, and that’s the case then the fonts are the clothes of that king. I am sure if you want your content to look good you really have to give some thought to the choice of fonts for your website.

Your fonts should be very easy to read on the user’s screen, they should be Web safe (will talk about that later below) and they should definitely match with the character of your website. Because now you can’t be using fat bold fonts of a cowboyish site look on a lovely romantic site, that just won’t fit in.

What is the difference between serif and sans serif fonts?

This is one of the things as a designer one should know about. Serif fonts can be found to have nice and fine cross lines at the endings. Times New Roman is the most common serif font which I am sure you must have heard of. Sans serif are fonts that do not have a serif. The word “sans” in french means without, so that should explain why it’s called Sans Serif.

Arial :

I tend to use this font a lot, just like lots of other web designers and web masters. Arial is a sans serif font, but the thing is that it doesn’t suit very well for small sized text. Because the spacing between its characters when it’s ARIAL is just too narrow.

Times New Roman :

This is the most common serif font there is. And since its the default font for web browsers, lots of beginners
tend to leave it as it is. It’s quite nice to look at with sizes of 12pt and above, but for smaller fonts you might have to look elsewhere.

Verdana :

This font is just one of those that I use a lot on my websites. It’s a sans serif font and is very easy to read on the web screen. And it’s one of those fonts that looks brilliant even at a very small size.

Georgia :

This font is my favorite font, and the reason is that it was actually built as an alternative to Times New Roman when their was demand for a better serif font for online viewing . The reason why it works
best for online reading is that it was designed for just this very purpose.

Trebuchet :

It’s a sans serif font, although it’s quite similar to Arial but a bit nicer to look at. The smaller sizes of this font is quite unreadable.

Comic Sans Serif :

If you have been into comics you might have seen the similar hand writing style as you get with this font.
I am not a big fan of this font but this can be a good font for fun and entertainment sites, although not
very good font for serious sites.

Which font is best one then?

Well that boils down to what you are after. I would say verdana is quite fairly winning the race in being available widely and can be seen properly on the screen, and since Georgia is my favorite it also has the charisma of what a font should be all about when you have to present content in a nice manner for your visitors.
